  • Bio: I am 79 years old and I live in South Africa. I am the Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, and I have been a priest since 1961. I was born in Klerksdorp, South Africa, a small, rural town near Johannesburg. My father, Zacheriah, was a teacher in the high school in my home town. After graduating secondary school in Ventersdorp, South Africa, I went on to attend the University of South Africa and receive my Bachelor of Arts degree. After three years in my father's footsteps as a teacher, I quit and decided to attend St. Peter's Theological College in pursuit of becoming a priest. At this time I was also beginning to become involved in anti-apartheid movements because of my experience teaching in schools where black students received much worse educations due to the stricter apartheid laws. After being adorned a priest in 1961, I moved to London to get my masters degree in theology. I spent the next 15 years of my life taking different positions in different countries relating to the Church. As the 1980s began, I became more and more outspoken against apartheid. I always stressed nonviolence and reconciliation between the two sides. In 1984, my efforts were recognized as being noble, and I was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the first South African to receive the award since Albert Luthuli in 1961. Also during that time, a year later in 1985, I was appointed to the position of Archbishop of Cape Town, and thus leader of the Anglican Church in South Africa. After the apartheid laws were lifted and Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa, I have been asked to be involved in many of the reconciliation and leadership efforts of the nation. My friend Nelson Mandela asked me to chair both the Truth and Reconciliation Committee and the Elders, positions of which I am grateful to have been bestowed.
  • Favorite Quotes: "I am not interested in picking up crumbs of compassion thrown from the table of someone who considers himself my master. I want the full menu of rights."; "If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate your neutrality." -Desmond Tutu

GROUP 1: African_Union
- EXPLANATION: This group fits my beliefs perfectly. This is a coalition of African leaders who believe in solving disputes through peaceful means. An African Union would allow the great minds of Africa to join together and make decisions that would have positive effects on the whole continent. This embodies what I have worked for all of my life: an equal and peaceful means of non-violent negotiations.
GROUP 2: youthsmakingchange
- EXPLANATION: I support the ideas of this group. I believe that the best way to ensure a better future is through the youth leaders of today. This group encourages the leaders of tomorrow to join together today to begin gaining experience in the leadership field. This is definitely a group with great endeavors.
GROUP 3: Believers_Hope
- EXPLANATION: I joined this group because it brings together believers in Christ to provide hope to those who need it. This group embodies what I did during the struggle against apartheid. Christians have always come together in times of need to provide support each other. This group do exactly that.
GROUP 4: WorldCup2010SouthAfrica
- EXPLANATION: This group means two things to me. It expresses my passion for soccer and the world cup. It also shows how far South Africa has come as a nation to be able to host the biggest sporting event in the world. This group shows how much the work of many people has payed off, and that we are now a truly equal nation.
GROUP 5: South African Christians
- EXPLANATION: This group is the perfect group for me. Being the Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town, I would consider myself to belong to the group of South African Christians. Throughout the years I have been actively involved in different activities throughout the Christian community. This group is another way for me to contribute to the lives of other Christians around me.
GROUP 6: World Leadership Committee
- EXPLANATION: This group provides a forum for discussion for the potential leaders of tomorrow. I have always supported anyone who wants to make a difference in their own community. This group is a great way for different people to discuss their ideas. This is, and as always been, what I have advocated.
GROUP 7: dadtalk
- EXPLANATION: This group pertains to me because I am a proud father of four. Even though I love my kids, I am always looking for parenting techniques and advice, even though my kids are all grown up. This group allows me to discuss any difficulties that I have regarding being a father. I have found it to be very helpful and enriching.
GROUP 8: avid_reader
- EXPLANATION: Ever since I was a child, I have always had a passion for reading. Being an avid reader has opened many doors in life for me. This group is a discussion forum for people to recommend books to others, all over the world. This is a group that has proved to provide bountiful suggestions regarding great books.
GROUP 9: TheologyandReligion
- EXPLANATION: This is a forum for discussion regarding theology. I welcome these discussion forums, because one must question his own religion in order to dig deeper into its meaning. This group also provides an area for adorned priests to provide advice to students of the faith going through their own education. This group is very helpful not only to me but to all of the people who take part in the discussions.
GROUP 10: freetibetandyou
- EXPLANATION: This group calls for the world to notice the situation in Tibet. The people of the human race must take action against oppression because of race, and there is such a situation in Tibet at the moment. This is similar to the oppression experienced in South Africa under apartheid, so I am strongly against the actions of China. If we do not take action against the oppressor, the one being oppressed will not be happy with our neutrality.

Quizzes Click here to find a quiz to take!
You must take at least 5 quizzes from this site and this site only!!
QUIZ 1: Which Cartoon Are You??
- RESULTS: I am Mulan
- EXPLANATION: This quiz correctly describes my personality. Mulan is tough, aggressive, and very brave. These qualities describe me especially well, as I would not have been able to oppose apartheid like I did without bravery and toughness. Mulan is also someone who fights for what she believes in, as do I.
QUIZ 2: Which era are you from??
- RESULTS: the 70s
- EXPLANATION: This quiz came up with an interesting result. It described me as hip and carefree, as well as loving peace signs. I would not completely agree with this because yes, I am carefree, but I also am not really into the hippie movement. I believe that a happy life is one that is carefree sometimes, while other times it has structure and purpose. This quiz is somewhat true, yet somewhat false.
QUIZ 3: How should you spend your summer?
- RESULTS: With my friends
- EXPLANATION: This quiz told me that I should hang out with my friends and be social this summer. This is definitely describes me, because I know that without my friends and allies I would never have been able to help overthrow apartheid law in South Africa. My friend Nelson Mandela and I will surely be spending a lot of time together working with The Elders this summer. This quiz really does describe me.
QUIZ 4: What kind of novel are you?
- RESULTS: Classic English Novel
- EXPLANATION: This type of novel is one who's rules are simple and must not be ignored. This type of novel correctly describes me. As a man of God, I have learned that one does not need to live with many complications to be happy. Also, I believe that I would do better being listened to than ignored, and thus this type of novel is an accurate description of me.
QUIZ 5: Which camp activity are you??
- RESULTS: sailing
This quiz said that I am most like sailing because I am both confident and laid-back. These are both accurate descriptions of myself. Being a leader of both the Church and the nation, I have learned to be confident and patient when dealing with adversity. These traits are the ones which assisted me through the tough times of apartheid.
